JACK Payne proved the hero as Charlton booked their place in the knockout stages with a last-gasp victory against Brighton U21s on Wednesday night.
The Addicks knew a win would enable them to climb above Gillingham into second place in Southern Group A behind Colchester.
Charlton’s Sam Lavelle headed in on the stroke of half-time, but Todd Miller levelled on 54 minutes. Then Payne cracked home an injury time winner just as penalties loomed.
Portsmouth advanced with a home draw against already-qualified AFC Wimbledon the previous night.
