Bristol Rovers boss Matt Taylor says the appointment of George Friend as director of football is a weight off his shoulders.
Friend, 36, joined the Gas as a player last summer but has struggled with ankle injuries throughout the campaign.
The full-back announced his retirement this week, ending a 510-game career with Exeter, Wolves, Doncaster, Middles brough, Birmingham and Rovers, and was immediately offered a key role off the pitch.
