Latics wipe out points deduction with big victory
Wigan Athletic manager Shaun Maloney couldn’t hide his delight after his side wiped out their eight-point deduction with a thumping win at Bolton – and moved out of the relegation zone in the process.
The Latics, relegated from the Championship last season, were hit with two four-point penalties ahead of the new campaign for failing to pay players’ wages on time and to meet an EFL funding deadline.
Charlie Wyke and Stephen Humphrys both scored twice as the Latics romped to a 4-0 win at high-flying Bolton to move 19th on two points.
“We came to terms with it in the summer,” said Maloney. “What was hard was how to broach it over the summer. We gave ourselves six games and we are ahead of schedule.
“We could not have thought we would have this good a start. But I knew with the players we brought in and during pre-season, something was happening.”
