Bristol City have completed the acquisition of Sunderland defender Adam Matthews on loan until the end of the season.
The former Celtic and Cardiff City right-back is set to add healthy competition to the Robins‘ defence with Luke Ayling, Zak Vyner and Mark Little capable all candidates for a starting spot.
The 24-year-old has barely featured for Sunderland since being signed under Dick Advocaat last summer for £2m, making only two appearances all season in a discontented season for Wales international.
City head coach Lee Johnson expressed his satisfaction at signing Matthews, who tasted European football with Celtic in both the Champions League and Europa League.
“He’s a quality, young signing who is hungry to play,” Johnson told the club’s website.
“He moved to Sunderland for £2m and hasn’t got in the team enough, so he’s keen to come here and prove himself.
“People may think ‘why do we need another right-back?’ It’s a number of things really. We’re in the market for good players and that’s what Adam is.
“It gives us the ability to move Luke Ayling into central midfield if we want, which is the position where he began. And we’re still looking in other areas,” Johnson concluded.
Matthews has won 12 caps with Wales to date and is available to start against Wolves tomorrow night, having trained with the Robins on Monday morning.
