BILLY Sharp has thanked the Doncaster fans for their support after he returned to the Keepmoat on a season-long from Southampton.
Sharp 27, scored 41 goals in 86 games for Donny before joining Southampton for £1.8m in January 2012. But after falling out of the reckoning under Saints boss Mauricio Pochettino, he has now returned to help Doncaster battle relegation.
“There were a few clubs, a few rumours,” he said. “But I had my heart set on coming here. I had a great spell last time so hopefully I can do it again.
“Some people say I shouldn’t have left, but I had ambitions of playing in the Premier League. I nearly got that chance. I was up there for a little while but it didn’t work out, which is frustrating.
“To be honest, at this stage in my career I need a lift. And the support the Doncaster fans gave me on twitter was overwhelming.
“I’ve said before, I play for the fans. People like me come and go. So do managers and chairmen. They are the ones who support the club forever. I can’t wait to get started for them.”
