Southend United could be on the brink of an excellent free agent signing, with former Gillingham midfielder Josh Wright in talks over a move to the club.
Wright left Gillingham by mutual consent a week ago after reportedly falling out with Gills manager Adrian Pennock, and is now free to join a club of his choosing.
Talks with Phil Brown over a move to Roots Hall are said to be going well, with the Shrimpers in line to recruit a player who scored 14 times from midfield last season.
Pennock left Wright out of his matchday squad for Gillingham’s 3-3 draw with Southend last month, with the player having to deny he refused to sit on the bench.
He tweeted: “It’s not for me to go into it right now but just remember always two sides to stories etc. but yes I was fit and available today that’s it.
“As said I can’t say much but all I will say is I DID NOT REFUSE TO BE ON THE BENCH.”
Gillingham’s Player of the Season last year, Wright has also represented the likes of Charlton, Scunthorpe, Millwall and Leyton Orient.
Southend are 15th in the League One table after five games, scoring a win, a loss and three draws thus far. Brown will be hoping that any potential deal for Wright can fire them up the division.
