Hull City secured promotion to the Premier League after beating Sheffield Wednesday at Wembley thanks to a spectacular second half goal from Mohamed Diame.
The Tigers had the best of the first half opportunities and would have been in front at the break if it was not for a spirited performance from Wednesday goalkeeper Keiren Westwood.
Westwood was in brilliant form keeping out efforts from Abel Hernandez and Moses Odubajo, whilst Diame crashed an effort from inside the box against the post.
At the other end of the pitch Fernando Forestieri and Ross Walace forced Eldin Jakupovic into saves but Steve Bruce‘s side would have gone into half time the happier.
As the game moved into the second half Hull continued to press forward and Westwood had to be alert to deny Michael Dawson’s powerful effort seven minutes after the break.
You could have forgiven the Hull fans for thinking that it could turn out to be one of those days when Andrew Robertson missed a superb chance to take the lead with half an hour remaining.
The Scotsman found himself in acres of space after latching onto Odubajo’s driven cross but he fired a first time effort well over the bar.
However Robertson’s blushes were spared as Hull’s dominance finally told when Westwood was beaten by a piece of brilliance from Diame.
The Senegal international picked the ball up 25 yards out from goal and curled a superb effort into the left hand corner.
Westwood managed to get a desperate hand to it but could not prevent the ball from nestling into the net and sending the Hull fans behind the goal into pandemonium.
As the final whistle drew closer Wednesday pilled forward in search of an illusive equaliser.
In the dying seconds substitute Jeremy Helan curled an effort from the edge of the box but it flew agonisingly over as the Tigers held on for a famous victory.
