Des Buckingham is a name very few people will have heard of, but I completely understand why Oxford United have appointed him.
Clubs are now seeing the flaws in managers doing recruitment.
They’re seeing the flaws in having a manager who doesn’t understand - or trust - data.
And they’re realising that if they take control of the recruitment and the data, they control the budget. Financially, there’s a recognition that it’s more sustainable to have an out-and-out head coach whose background is in coaching, not in management.
