Matt Derbyshire has turned down a new contract offer from Rotherham to sign for Cypriot side Omonia Nicosia.
The 30-year-old played a key part in the Millers successful bid for Championship survival, scoring in wins against Brentford and Sheffield Wednesday which would prove a catalyst in helping the club embark on a 11-match unbeaten run to end the season strongly.
The former Blackburn Rovers striker found the back of the net 17 times in 69 appearances for the Reds, but has opted to join Omonia who finished 3rd in the Cyprus First Division this season.
A club statement posted on United’s website, read: “Following a meeting between the manager and Matt Derbyshire, Matt has decided that he wishes to take up an opportunity to join A C Omonia Nicosia in Cyrpus.
“The club would like to place on record our thanks to Matt for his major contribution over the past two seasons where he has been a key player in our Championship campaigns.”
Derbyshire was one of three out-of-contract players offered deals to extend their stay at New York Stadium, with the futures of defenders Kirk Broadfoot and Stephen Kelly set to be confirmed within days.
New boss Alan Stubbs said earlier in the week, “It’s fair to stay I would like all three to remain at the club.”
Derbyshire had the following message to say on a social media account:
It’s often hard for players at EFL level to find new clubs, just like finding the right online casino can be tasking – this casino reviews site will make it that bit easier.
