Mickey Mellon has called for ‘nervy’ Shrewsbury Town fans to change their ways and become confident as the club battle for automatic promotion to League 1.
After two games without a win, the Shrews won a hard-fought match against relegation strugglers Oxford United at the weekend. Yet, the club have not fell out of the top three since 22nd November leading Mellon to speak his mind on the mellow atmosphere at New Meadow.
“The crowd have been exceptionally nervy. We need the crowd working for us, not against us. They have a massive part to play. We need you to roar us on,” said the Shrewsbury manager.
The 43-year-old Scot continued: “We need the fans this time of the year. It is everyone’s responsibility to get right behind the lads. It’s important.”
The club have slipped up in the chase to be crowned league champions, currently five points behind Burton Albion, but are four points clear of 4th-placed Bury with Mellon able to claim the best defence record in the division.
Their next match is against Portsmouth at Fratton Park on Saturday.
